The base technique that Catia uses for creating all her pieces is the "Colombino" technique- a very old and exclusively manual technique. This ancient method, still used in Tuscany, consists in placing one cord of clay on top of another. The decorations which remain in plain terracotta are obtained using a manual tool which produces pieces of "spaghetti" in varying thicknesses and lengths. After drying and then firing the objects in which the clay changes color from grey to red, the item is then ready to be glazed and decorated by hand using a paint brush. At the end of the various phases after the objects are removed from the kiln they are shiny and each one always differs from the others. They are not called terracotta any more, but majolica.

Although this item was originally created as a bottle holder it can really be used in a variety of ways. Very decorative as a flower vase.

Measures 5.10" H x 4.30' opening

Il Tafano Ceramics
The production and decoration of Tuscan ceramics varies greatly from artisan to artisan. Some artists prefer creating more contemporary designs others replicate identical pieces from the 15th and 16th centuries. All the ceramics seen in florenceinabox.com are hand crafted and hand painted each with the artists unique approach and of the highest quality. The base technique that Catia Massai uses for creating all her pieces is the "Colombino" technique; a very old and exclusively manual technique.
